Tips on How to Speak Australian (‘Strine’)

  1. Change letters at the end of words. Try changing the letters at the end of some words, especially the “r” sound. So supper, after, and dinner become supah, aftah, and dinnah.

  2. Shorten your words. Australians love to shorten their words, because who has time for all those letters? For example, a Service station is a servo.

  3. Add an -ey or -ie to words. Present is pressie, Breakfast is brekkie, and mosquito is mozzie.

  4. Pronounce “oo” sound like “ew”. Australians say pool, school and cool like pewl, skewl and kewl.
